Comparison

The business alternative to WeTransfer

WeTransfer was built to send something quickly, not to account for client data. If you share business documents, you need more grip: where is the data, who can reach it, and what happens after sending? Here is how codocs and WeTransfer compare.

When is WeTransfer simply fine?

For a photo album to family or a presentation without sensitive content, WeTransfer is an excellent service. The comparison above is about something else: documents you carry business responsibility for, such as contracts, annual figures and client personal data. Different requirements apply there.

What to look for in a business alternative

Not every file-sharing platform is suitable for documents your business is accountable for. Five requirements that separate a consumer service from a workable business alternative to WeTransfer:

  1. Storage and jurisdiction inside the EU

For personal data you want servers inside the EU, under European jurisdiction. A service that routes traffic through American servers makes your GDPR accountability needlessly complicated.

  2. Control after sending

A sent e-mail attachment or WeTransfer link is final. A business alternative lets you revoke links, set an expiry date and add a password that you share through a different channel.

  3. Insight into what happens

In case of a data breach you must be able to reconstruct who had access and when. Without an audit log and download notifications you have nothing to show.

  4. A data processing agreement

If you share client documents, a data processing agreement with your platform is not a luxury but a GDPR requirement (article 28). Consumer services rarely offer one.

  5. Encryption at rest

Files should be stored encrypted on the server, not just encrypted in transit. Ask about it; the answer says a lot about how seriously a service takes security.

Who is codocs built for?

Accountants and financial advisors

Share annual figures, payslips and ID copies with a password and an expiry date. The audit log shows who downloaded what, exactly what you need during an audit.

HR and office managers

Personnel files and contracts stay within the EU. Revoke a sent link the moment a process ends, and recipients never need an account.

Agencies and freelancers

Deliver files to clients with your own message attached. Large files up to 5 GB per upload, and your library keeps everything in one place.

Switch in ten minutes

Create a free account

Registration takes two minutes and no credit card. You start with 1 GB of storage and uploads up to 1 GB per file.

Send the way you are used to

The send screen works like WeTransfer: drop the file, add recipients, send. The difference is what you get on top: a password, an expiry date and a revocable link per recipient.

Build up your library

Files you share more often live in your own library. One upload, multiple links, and per link you decide who has access and until when.

Frequently asked questions

Can I try codocs for free?

Yes. The free account gives you 1 GB of storage and uploads up to 1 GB per file, no credit card required. Upgrade whenever you need more room.

Do recipients need an account?

No. A recipient clicks the link, enters the password if you set one, and downloads. That is all.

Where exactly are my files stored?

Encrypted on servers in the EU (Amsterdam region). Your data never leaves Europe, and for business customers we put that in writing in the data processing agreement.

Is codocs also an alternative to WeTransfer Pro?

Yes. Compare the pricing: codocs Pro costs 4.95 euros per month for 25 GB of storage and uploads up to 2 GB, including passwords, expiry dates, revocable links and an audit log. WeTransfer charges considerably more for comparable features.

What happens to my files if I stop?

You remain the owner. You can download all your files and cancel your account whenever you want. Deleted files are permanently wiped from our servers after thirty days.

Conclusion

For private use, WeTransfer is fine. For business use, codocs wins on every point that then matters: passwords and expiry dates in the free tier, links you can revoke, download insight, EU hosting and a data processing agreement. If you share client data or confidential documents, that is not a luxury but accountability. And switching takes ten minutes.
